About the movie:

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar

It’s the perfect drive-in movie for Pride: three glamorous drag stars take a road trip across the U.S. to deliver a message scrawled on a note in a Chinese restaurant. On the way they find adventure, love, trouble, friendship, and people who need them.

Starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo, this film certainly has its flaws (most notably, starring three cisgender men as Trans women.) Even so, it was groundbreaking in portraying Trans women as leading characters with complexity, strength, grace, intelligence, and heroism. Produced in 1995, To Wong Foo tackles topics like racism, misogyny, assault, classism, and abuse of power with incredible awareness and articulation for its time. Moreover, it does so with such a sense of humor and rollicking adventure that the audience is left laughing and cheering for these iconic heroes.
